About this transfer

GuideUpdated May 14, 20262 min read

A 30-minute grocery stop on the way from SJD to your villa rental is a standard add-on: $25 USD added to your transfer (a 60-min stop is $50). Walmart, Costco (membership required), and La Comer are the three popular stops on the corridor route. Ideal for families with kids, weekly villa rentals, or anyone who wants a stocked fridge on arrival.

How a grocery stop works

Add the grocery stop at booking (or via WhatsApp later). On arrival, we route from SJD to your chosen supermarket, the driver waits at the entrance for up to 30 minutes, helps load groceries, and continues to your villa. Total transfer time adds 35-45 minutes (30 min stop + 5-15 min routing detour, depending on your villa zone).

Which supermarket should you choose?

Walmart — best all-around

Walmart Cabo San Lucas (right off Highway 1, en route from SJD to Cabo San Lucas) is the easy default. Groceries, beach gear (umbrellas, chairs, floaties), water, beer, basic cookware, kids items — everything in one stop. No membership required. The widest selection at the lowest prices. The store is 5 minutes off our standard corridor route.

Costco — best for groups + bulk

Costco Cabo San Lucas (near the entrance to downtown Cabo San Lucas) is the right call for groups of 8+ or week+ stays. Bulk pricing on alcohol, meat, paper goods, snacks. **Membership required** — Costco Mexico accepts US and Canadian memberships. Without one, Walmart is your better bet. Store visit takes 30-45 min for a serious restock.

La Comer — best for premium / smaller list

La Comer (between SJD and the Tourist Corridor) is the upscale option — think Whole Foods/Erewhon equivalent. Specialty cheeses, imported wines, organic produce, premium pastries. Smaller and quicker than Walmart or Costco; ideal for a fast curated restock rather than a household haul. No membership.

When a grocery stop makes sense

  • You're staying in a villa rental (most have kitchens; you save 50%+ on food vs eating out).
  • You have a family with kids — having milk, juice, snacks, and breakfast cereal ready beats a 9 PM resort store run.
  • You have specific dietary needs (gluten-free, vegan, baby formula) that hotel restaurants may not stock.
  • You're staying 5+ nights and want a "home base" feel.
  • You're celebrating with a group — pre-stocking the villa with alcohol + snacks is part of the welcome.

When to skip the grocery stop

  • You're staying at an all-inclusive resort (food + drinks are included; the stop saves nothing).
  • You're a couple staying 1-3 nights and plan to eat out (the stop adds 35-45 min for items you won't use).
  • Late-night arrival (9 PM+) — most supermarkets close by 10 PM; check store hours before adding the stop.

Tips for an efficient stop

  1. Pre-write your list — 30 min goes fast at Walmart and Costco. A list cuts decision fatigue and keeps you on schedule.
  2. Bring an extra bag or two — for a Costco run, the driver can help carry bulky items to the trunk.
  3. Pay with card — accepted everywhere; no cash needed. Costco only takes Visa in Mexico.
  4. Buy water — Cabo tap water is not drinkable; even at the resort you'll want bottled. Big jugs are 5x cheaper at supermarkets than from the hotel.
  5. Beer + tequila at Costco — Mexican alcohol pricing is excellent; a case of Pacifico runs ~$15-20 USD.
  6. Communicate any cart status — if you need an extra 10 min, the driver waits without question. We don't hard-cut at 30 min.
